The Men's 200m Final ended in dramatic fashion after England's Zharnel Hughes celebrated after he thought he had won a gold medal, only for him to be disqualified several minutes later.

In a tight race, Hughes appeared to lock arms with Trinidad and Tobago's Jereem Richards during the home stretch.

Both men finished in a dead heat of 20.12 seconds, but a photo-finish handed the decision to Hughes.

Hughes broke out into celebration in a lap of honour after he thought he had won a historic gold.

But after an official review, Hughes was stripped of the gold after he was deemed to make contact with the Trinidad and Tobago sprinter.

Richards, who finished second, was promoted to first and awarded the gold medal by officials.

England and Hughes reportedly appealed the disqualification but it was rejected late on Thursday night.

The contact occurred in the final 10m of the race when Hughes appeared to slow down dramatically.

"It's unbelievably close, it is just crazy what happened in the last 10 meters," Seven commentator Bruce McAvaney said.
