Wanderers land Kamau and Tongyik in double swoop

Josep Gombau has sealed the capture of former protégés Bruce Kamau and Ruon Tongyik for next season, as he accelerates the process of imposing his own imprint on Western Sydney Wanderers.

It’s a reunion for the Wanderers coach who nurtured the duo during his spell with Adelaide United and then again with Australia’s under-23s.

The close friends are both off contract at Melbourne City - and their futures have been a matter of conjecture for some months.

They have been on the wanted list of a host of clubs, but opted for Wanderers due in large part to the Gombau factor, and continuing their careers under a coach whose faith in them is absolute.

It’s believed they have both signed multi-year deals on Wanderland, though their agent, Sydney-based Paddy Dominguez, declined to make any comment on their futures when contacted by The World Game on Thursday.

Winger Kamau, 22, has made 16 appearances for City this season, the last of which was the 2-1 Melbourne derby loss to Victory at the beginning of the month.

Central defender Tongyik, 21, joined City in 2016 - the same year as Kamau - and made 15 appearances in his debut season.

But despite his undoubted promise, he has failed to feature for a single minute under Warren Joyce this season, and has been hankering for a fresh opportunity elsewhere.
