Nothing fills up Oxford Street quite like Mardi Gras, so it was no surprise that the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras brought with it some next-level crowds.

Which meant that some onlookers got in early.

There were rainbow babies...

And rainbow families.

The emergency services were there...

As were the athletes...

... and superheroes.

The First Nations float lead the way.

There were head pieces...

... fluffy bits...

... and lots of glitter.

Queer icon Cher turned up!

And quickly won herself some powerful fans...

There was even a history-making wedding!

But the 78ers, who were there at the very first Mardi Gras forty years ago, deservedly stole the show...

Oh, and we at SBS had the best time ever!

And finally, there were some very good rainbow doggos keen to get in on the action.

... Did we mention all the beautiful, very good rainbow doggos?

The 40th Annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras airs tonight, March 4 at 8:30pm on SBS.
