The California State Capitol building has raised the rainbow flag for the first time in history, celebrating Pride Month in the United States.

The move comes despite the from flying pride flags, a decision which caused outrage among the LGBTIQ+ community last week.

Taking to Twitter, the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, stood by his decision, writing: "For the first time in our state’s history, the Pride flag has been raised at our State Capitol!!"
"In California, we celebrate and support our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community’s right to live out loud – during Pride month and every month,’ Newsom continued in a prepared statement.

"By flying the pride flag over the State Capitol, we send a clear message that California is welcoming and inclusive to all, regardless of how you identify or who you love."

California isn't the only state to throw caution to the wind and raise the rainbow flag, at their capitol buildings.

"Publicly displaying the Rainbow Pride Flag sends a clear and unequivocal message that Wisconsin is a welcoming and inclusive place where everyone can live without fear of persecution, judgment, or discrimination," Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said after making an executive order to fly the flag.
