The internet is screaming yaasss but Mardi Gras has called it fake news... for now.

Calling all 'Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves', if we're to 'Believe' a report from the  from Wednesday, it looks like actual icon Cher may be headlining the 40th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras next year.

The legendary singer may have dropped a hint via her truly entertaining Twitter feed, but then again knowing Cher's Tweets she could have also just lost her car in a parking lot.
Was it a hint to her arriving down under next year to celebrate Mardi Gras' 40th anniversary? Or was it just a vague sense of nihilism that struck her in the early hours of the morning?
Well the also outlines a few other factors like a that, thanks to a sneaky Google cache, seemed to hint the deal was done and dusted, though SMH reports it may still be in the works.

Still, despite the news not being 100% confirmed, there has obviously been a lot of excitement.
Even Tina Arena, who last performed at the party in 2014, chimed in earlier this month letting Cher know how keen Australia was to see her join the many celebs who had performed including Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, RuPaul and Kylie Minogue.
We may be getting a little ahead of ourselves as the official Mardi Gras Twitter account posted a message on Thursday morning calling the announcement "fake news".
Only time will tell but if the Mama Mia 2: Here We Go Again star misses out on what will be the first Mardi Gras since the legislation of marriage equality this month, the 71-year-old really will be wishing she could turn back time.
