Nixon, who has previously refused to deny the rumours, saying: "I have heard those rumours. I've heard them. I've read them", is a longtime public education activist and has previously used her public platform to campaign for same-sex marriage and reproductive rights.
According to the , Nixon has now engaged in talks with a pair of veteran Democratic political operatives, which could be indication that she's moving toward an announcement.

Rebecca Capellan, Nixon’s publicist, wouldn't deny or confirm rumours.
“Many concerned New Yorkers have been encouraging Cynthia to run for office, and as she has said previously, she will continue to explore it,” Capellan said in a statement. “If and when such a decision is made, Cynthia will be sure to make her plans public.”

If elected, Nixon would become New York’s first female and openly bisexual governor.
