Fans are excited to have Natalie Portman starring as the new 'Thor'

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are sharing their excitement at the news that Natalie Portman would be reprising her role as Jane Foster and, following in the original comic book's footsteps, taking on the power of Thor's hammer in Thor: Love and Thunder.

The announcement was made alongside director Taika Waititi, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson - who will co-star as Valkyrie, likely MCU's - during .

Sharing the news on Instagram, Portman wrote: "So thrilled to share the news with you today at that I’ll be returning to the as female Thor with legends and . (Remember this as the before picture for when I get jacked)."

Having that she was "done" with Marvel, the unexpected move was celebrated by die-hard fans on social media.
While Marvel is keeping most of the movie's details under wraps, in the comic books Portman's character of Jane Foster becomes Thor after the original Thor (Chris Hemsworth in the movies) is deemed unworthy to wield his hammer, known as the Mjolnir.

The highly anticipated film is set for release in 2021.
