For many, Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby was the highlight of yesterday's Emmy Awards.

Riding a wave of success following her critically acclaimed Netflix special Nanette, Gadsby may have only been on stage for a minute, but in that minute she managed to earn the audience's laughter, applause and contemplation. It was a telling moment of television for Gadsby, who after years of abuse and mental health struggles, is finally being embraced as a shining light on the world stage.

And fighting her critics not with a raised voice or flared temper, but with, as she'd say, just jokes.
