Harry Styles in talks to star in queer romantic drama

Harry Styles is in talks to star alongside Lily James in an adaptation of the novel ‘My Policeman’, a queer romance set in the 1950s.

Harry Styles will be returning to the silver screen, in talks to star in the Amazon Studios adaptation of 1950s queer romance novel My Policeman.

According to Collider, Styles, who made his feature film debut in Dunkirk, is in final negotiations to star in the feature film, based on Bethan Roberts' acclaimed 2012 novel My Policeman. The director of Love, Simon,Greg Berlanti, is attached to produce the film, with the script adapted by Oscar-nominated writer Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) and Tony Award winning director Michael Grandage (Genius) in line to direct.

British actor Lily James is also in negotiations to appear in the film, slated to play the female lead.

My Policeman is set in the 1950s' in Brighton, England, where schoolteacher Marion first catches sight of Tom and instantly falls in love with the handsome policeman. However, Tom soon meets Patrick, a museum curator, and is immediately drawn to him. Given the views on same-sex relationships at the time, Tom relents his attraction to Patrick and marries Marion, establishing a complicated love triangle.

Styles has previously addressed his own sexuality, stating he believes sexuality is "something that's fun".

Speaking to The Guardian, the singer and actor continued: "It’s not like I’m sitting on an answer, and protecting it, and holding it back. It’s not a case of: I’m not telling you cos I don’t want to tell you. It’s not: ooh this is mine and it’s not yours. It’s: who cares? Does that make sense? It’s just: who cares?"

Styles went on, saying that he doesn't make his creative choices through the lens of sexual identity.

“Am I sprinkling in nuggets of sexual ambiguity to try and be more interesting? No,” he said.

“In terms of how I wanna dress, and what the album sleeve’s gonna be, I tend to make decisions in terms of collaborators I want to work with. I want things to look a certain way. Not because it makes me look gay, or it makes me look straight, or it makes me look bisexual, but because I think it looks cool.

"And more than that, I dunno, I just think sexuality’s something that’s fun. Honestly? I can’t say I’ve given it any more thought than that.”
