Groundbreaking lesbian TV series The L Word is set to return, with some of the show's original cast signing on to reprise their roles.

According to , the trailblazing series, which originally ran from 2004 to 2009, will be brought back to life by Showtime - with Jennifer Beals (Bette), Katherine Moennig (Shane) and Leisha Hailey (Alice) each returning as cast-members and executive producers.

The show's creator Ilene Chaiken will also serve as executive producer, while writer/director Marja-Lewis Ryan will be showrunner.
Addressing the long-awaited announcement, Gary Levine, Showtime’s co-president of entertainment, said: “Marja has brought her unique and contemporary vision to The L Word and blended it beautifully into the fabric of Ilene’s groundbreaking series."

He added: “This revered show was both entertaining and impactful when it originally ran on Showtime, and we are confident that our new version will do that and more in 2019.”

The Hollywood Reporter has also speculated that additional cast-members from the original series could appear in the sequel, including Erin Daniels (Dana), Laurel Holloman (Tina), Mia Kirshner (Jenny), Sarah Shahi (Carmen) and Pam Grier (Kit).

The return will act as a sequel (not a reboot) and is expected to screen before the end of the year.
