Orlando mayor Buddy Dyer has announced that June 12 will be named “Orlando United Day—A Day of Love and Kindness” to commemorate the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016.

"Our community will never forget the tragedy of Pulse or the grief of those who lost loved ones," Mayor Dyer said in a video posted on Youtube.

Teresa Jacobs—the mayor of Orange County, Florida—joined Dyer in announcing the memorial day.

"As we prepare for the anniversary of Pulse, the world is working to honour and remember the lives we lost," Jacobs said.

"Through a day of love and kindness dedicated to the legacy of those who perished, we will continue to cherish their memories."
There will be a number of events held in Orlando on June 12 to remember the 49 victims, who were mostly queer people of colour.
During the day, a reflective ceremony will be held with a reading of the victims’ names and a display of 49 wreaths.

Gatherings will be held throughout the evening with speeches from community leaders, prayers, live music and dance.
