Lana Wachowski will be returning to the Matrix, signing on to write, direct and produce a fourth film in the popular noughties franchise.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana,” Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Picture Group, .

“Lana is a true visionary - a singular and original creative filmmaker - and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

Stars Keanu Reeves (Neo) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) are also believed to be returning to their roles.
The first three movies - The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions - were each written and directed by Lana Wachowski and her twin sister, Lilly Wachowski, and raked in over $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” Lana Wachowski said of the upcoming movie.

“I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

The Wachowski sisters previously collaborated on science fiction drama series for Netflix, which was celebrated by fans for its effortlessly diverse cast and complex character arcs.

While her sister works away on the fourth Matrix movie, Lilly Wachowski has reportedly signed on to write and direct a new drama comedy series called Work in Progress for Showtime.
