‘Not a boyfriend, a girlfriend’: contestant comes out during beauty pageant

A beauty queen in the Philippines to hosts at the recent Binibining Cebu pageant when they asked about her relationship status.  

During the interview portion of the contest, Maria Izobel Taguiam—who was representing the Tabogon municipality—was asked whether she had a boyfriend. 

“Yes, but not a boyfriend but a girlfriend,” Taguiam replied to Miss Earth 2008 Karla Henry. 

“Because I believe love does not see gender and if you love that someone, go for it.”

The high-school student has been praised on Twitter for her response at the pageant.
The 17-year-old—who has been in a relationship for five months—later explained to the that she wanted to be true to herself during the interview. 

“I just want to be honest as possible and answer from the bottom of my heart that’s why I decided to reveal it during the interview,” Taguiam said.
