Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa has opened up about his experience working on popular new Netflix series Sex Education.
Playing one of the show's most vibrant and beloved characters, the openly gay Eric, 26-year-old Gatwa said he was excited to represent members of the black gay community, who too often fall victim to "narrow representation" on TV.
“It’s very important to see a black gay teen represented,” Gatwa explained in an interview with .
“I think there’s quite a narrow representation of gay people on TV and I think that we need to push that. And I think that we need to allow for a lot more stories to be told.”
Gatwa continued: “The black gay experience isn’t one that is often told. And that community is struggling to find its feet because being a minority within a minority is an extremely difficult thing.”
Sex Education for its diverse representation and nuanced storytelling. The series follows the story of Otis (Asa Butterfield) whose divorced parents are both sex therapists. While his father lives overseas, Otis lives with his mother (Gillian Anderson), who runs her therapy practice out of their family home.
Struggling with his own emerging sexuality, Otis and his best friend, Eric (played by Ncuti Gatwa), soon befriend the dynamic Maeve (Emma Mackey) and configure a plan to make money by running an in-school sex therapy business of their own.
