Sweden is about to get its first ever LGBT-certified sports stadium.

Studenternas stadium, in the city of Uppsala, has been designed to be as inclusive as possible, featuring gender-neutral toilets and accessible dressing rooms.

Set to reopen in 2020 after extensive refurbishments, the stadium will also offer all future staff members training on a number of LGBTIQ+ issues.

Danne Eriksson, the municipality’s marketing director for sport and leisure, : “Uppsala municipality aims to be open and inclusive, where everyone has the same rights and possibilities."
He continued: “We want to guarantee equal treatment in all areas, regardless of gender, gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation.”

Eriksson added that he hoped the stadium would help "increase the feeling of belonging, comfort and safety” while also “improving knowledge and understanding of LGBT people and equality”.
Sweden is well-known for being one of the most progressive countries in Europe, having already opened an LGBT-certified swimming pool in 2015 which was designed to cater to members of the trans and gender diverse communities as well as those on the spectrum of disability.
