An ordained minister and proud mum from Oklahoma has caught the internet's attention for all the right reasons - offering to be a stand-in mum at same-sex weddings.

An active advocate for the LGBTIQ+ community, Sara Cunningham made the offer on social media and was soon swamped with touching messages.

"PSA. If you need a mum to attend your same sex wedding because your biological mum won’t. Call me," she wrote on Facebook.
She continued: "I’m there. I’ll be your biggest fan. I’ll even bring the bubbles."

Speaking to , Cunningham said that she was inspired to take action by her own gay son.

"I thought, 'If my son is going to hell for being gay I’m gonna fight for him like my hair is on fire,'" she said.

She added:"Since then I’ve gotten educated and no longer believe that — so now I’ve [been] fighting for him and the LGBTQ community like my hair is on fire because I’ve seen the power of what fear and ignorance can do."

Cunngingham explained that the post was the result of discussions she'd had with several same-sex couples — "how their parents refuse to attend their wedding, or even acknowledge their relationships," she told BuzzFeed.
Cunningham's post soon inspired dozens of comments from other mothers across the United States, stating their locations and offering to be stand-in mums for local members of the community.

"People need hope — I sure do — and we need to be that for each other in any way, shape, or form," Cunningham said.

"Hope never disappoints."
