Can dogs really detect cancer?

It’s amazing what you learn when David Rees teaches you how to pat a dog on the second season of 'Going Deep'.

In the first season of Going Deep with David Rees, we learnt the correct way to do everything from flipping a coin and throwing a paper aeroplane to tying shoelaces and shaking hands. Hosted by the man who launched an artisanal pencil sharpening service (yes, ) at the start of the decade, the series teaches you how to do things you think you already know how to do.

Simple things, like patting a dog, the subject of season two’s first lesson. But since Rees has 20ish minutes to fill each episode, we also receive some added instruction. In episode one, as well as getting a step-by-step lesson in the best way to approach a dog so you don’t get your hand bitten off, Rees’s journey to understand canine behaviour takes him into a lab conducting experiments on a dog’s ability to sniff out blood from a cancer patient.

You’ve probably heard of people’s pet dogs detecting their cancerous tumours before doctors. While there’s substantial anecdotal evidence to support the claim, studies have been limited and inconclusive. But what we see on Going Deep will have you believing dogs are the future of cancer research.

Also coming up in season two, Rees teaches us how to eavesdrop (after having the wax cleaned out of his ear), how to take (and give) a punch to ensure you suffer the least damage to your body and how to bounce a ball. Bounce a ball? Surely any three-year-old can master that, right? Well, maybe not a five-wall challenge. Episode four teaches you about that.

Signing your name (preserving great penmanship and ensuring signature security in the digital age), taking a nap (when you should nap and how to have a good nap), making toast (finding the best bread and how much to toast it) and doing the dishes (a crash course in getting off caked-on stains) are the other skills you’ll never look at the same way again after Rees is finished with them.

Season 2 of Going Deep with David Rees starts Tuesday 10 April at 8pm on SBS VICELAND.
