NITV audiences will be familiar with Ernie Dingo’s Going Places, and now, season two of the show is back in a new half-hour format airing on SBS on Wednesday nights from 10 April.

Witness the majesty of this country through the eyes of locals and newcomers who’ve made their home here, in places like Kangaroo Island, Far North Queensland, Cradle Mountain and Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge). There’s also a moving return for Ernie to his hometown on the Murchison River in Western Australia.

In an interview with Nick Bhasin for The Playlist podcast, Ernie talks about the joys of making the show, his extensive acting career, and life in general...

NB: What attracted you to doing something like Going Places?

ED: All the good jobs were taken. Mate, they wanted me out of town. I said, ‘Where am I going?’ They said, ‘Places’.

NB: Get him in a helicopter…

ED: We go to a certain area that’s renown, talk to people who live there, work there, originally from there, or new chums who’ve come into town, and what is it about that place that’s allowed them to blossom? Talking to certain people in the community about why they live there, being such a pretty place, or such an environment that allows you to grow, from a tourist point of view, cultural, education, whatever it is.

NB: I’ve been to a couple of those places – Cape Tribulation, Cradle Mountain – but you have a much more in-depth experience; it makes the place seem a lot more than a tourist destination.

ED: It helps that I’ve been there 20, 30 years ago, and it’s changed, there are new owners. I’ve been to a lot of the places where they used to employ Aboriginals to give them a start in that area, and I go back with Going Places and the Aboriginals own the building!
