How Miami broke Richard Ayoade

The ‘Travel Man’ host finds enjoyment in the US city least likely to impress him.

If you were to try to pick the American city in which Travel Man’s Richard Ayoade would feel least comfortable, then Miami, Florida would surely be a top contender. The sun-soaked party town offers many of the things the comedian finds undesirable: beaches, buff bodies, pastel-coloured clothing, poolside cocktails. And yet, when Ayoade visits Miami with fellow comic Rhod Gilbert, he has a surprisingly good time.

It’s mostly due to a meal of stone crab claws. While Ayoade is unimpressed by the houses on Star Island and turns his nose up at yoga on the beach, the dining experience at Joe’s actually brings a smile to his face, something which blows Gilbert away.

Even more surprising, it’s not the only thing in Miami that Ayoade enjoys. Following an Everglades tour on their second day – he understandably finds the crocodiles terrifying – the afternoon’s activities are a hit with the normally hard-to-please host. Who’d have guessed it!?
