Romper Stomper: The movie David Stratton famously refused to rate

Watch the review that made TV history.

In the November 11, 1992 episode of The Movie Show, Margaret and David were divided over the controversial release of Geoffrey Wright's Romper Stomper. David refused to rate the movie, expressing concern about its unflinching depiction of race-based violence in Melbourne's suburbs.

"This is in no way a pleasant film experience. It is relentlessly psychologically violent, almost nauseatingly so on occasion. However it is one of the finest films to be made in this country in recent years." - Margaret Pomeranz,  ★★★★ 1/2

"I profoundly disagree with you [...] In these volatile times, with racism on the march again all over the world, this is a dangerous film."  - David Stratton, Refused to rate

The TV version of Romper Stomper has an MA15+ rating
airs 9.45pm Wednesday 15 January on SBS World Movies and will be streaming at SBS On Demand for 10 days after it airs.
