26-year-old truck driver Samandeep Singh was produced in court on Friday after his truck allegedly ploughed into a motorbike killing a policewoman in Melbourne on Thursday.

reported Singh has been charged with culpable driving causing death and dangerous driving.

Police alleged in the court that Singh’s truck failed to stop at a red light in Melbourne’s south-east, hitting the motorbike in Wantirna, and killing the rider of the motorbike, a policewoman.

The 40-year-old policewoman, First Constable D-Anne Deleo was trapped underneath the truck until she was freed by emergency services. She died at the scene.

“Tragically she is a policewoman who was on her way to work, which made it even more challenging for the police who responded,” Assistant Commissioner Rick Nugent said.

Samandeep’s lawyer Chen Yang told the court that his client was assessed as being “suicidal”.

His lawyer, Chen Yang said a forensic medical officer diagnosed his clients as having “suicidal ideation” after his arrest.

Singh did not apply for bail and will re-appear in court in May.
