A tragic car crash in Sydney, involving a young group of 4 people, believed to be of Indian descent, has resulted into death of a young 27-year-old woman and has seriously injured two other passengers.
The 23-year-old man who was driving the car was arrested and taken to Manly Police Station where he was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, NSW Police said in a .
He was refused bail and is due to appear at Manly Local Court today.
Police told the car smashed into a tree on Mona Vale Road in Sydney about 1am on Tuesday morning.
NSW Police said that this young group of Indian descent were work colleagues who were on their way home from a Sydney restaurant.
While the 27-year-old woman sitting in the back seat died at the scene, another 23-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were seriously injured and taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.
The driver underwent mandatory drug and alcohol testing in hospital before he was arrested and taken to Manly Police Station for questioning.
Chief Inspector Phillip Brooks says police are investigating if speed was a factor in the crash.
"This was a group of young people of Indian decent that we believe had finished work at a restaurant nearby and were travelling home after their evening work," he told reporters on Tuesday.
"To find a 27-year-old female deceased at the scene certainly highlights the very tragic nature of this event."
Police were attempting to contact the family of the deceased via the Indian consulate, he said.
