The federal budget will include measures for student loan debt relief; as well as payments for students undertaking mandatory work placements in social work, teaching, nursing and midwifery.

The federal government has confirmed that it will adopt recommendations made in a major review* (Universities Deal) of the university sector - finalised in February - to provide payments to help with living costs while students undertake compulsory work placements in teaching, social work, nursing or midwifery.

The payment will be approximately $320 [[$319.50]] per week during the placement period.

It will be tested on its capabilities and available from July 1 next year.

This is expected to benefit approximately 68,000 higher education students; and 5,000 vocational education and training students.
