Teachers have urged the federal government to ensure that around 40 students preparing to sit their year 12 exams are granted permanent residency, so they can pursue tertiary education.

The students from refugee backgrounds are part of a group of 19,000 people who have been living on temporary visas for up to a decade, under a policy affecting asylum seeker boat arrivals.

Their visa status currently prevents them from accessing government fee help to continue education at a tertiary level.
