Australian student allegedly molested by taxi driver in India

According to police officials from Colaba police station, the girl from Australia came to Mumbai for studies and was staying at a hostel.

A 20-year-old Australian student who is currently in India for studies and is working with a NGO, was molested by a taxi driver in Mumbai, reported.

30-year-old taxi driver Zia Ul Ansari was arrested for allegedly molesting an Australian student in Colaba area of South Mumbai, police said on Saturday.

The 20-year-old student boarded Ansari’s taxi on 20th January when she was allegedly touched inappropriately by the taxi driver under the pretext of fastening her seat belt, police said.

Ansari who regularly drives commuters in Colaba repeated the same act on January 23rd as well, police said.

He also stalked and followed the girl to her hostel where she had put up in Colaba while working with a NGO.

The girl shared her ordeal with her friends at work and hostel and later lodged a police complaint with Mumbai Police on January 26th.

The cops traced CCTV footage, identified the car's number and nabbed the culprit.

A case of molestation under section 354 of the IPC has been registered against Ansari, Manojkumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) was quoted saying by .

He was produced in the court and was sent to police custody for one day, the officer added.
