It's believed a man wanted for working in the NSW health system for more than a decade posing as a doctor has been hiding in India.

Shyam Acharya went on the run days before he was due to face court last week over allegations he gained medical registration, was recruited and gained employment in four NSW hospitals using fake documents.

NSW Police hasn't confirmed the reports but say a special task force has been set up to find the supposed fake doctor.

But on Tuesday evening, 7News reported that detectives have traced Shyam Acharya and is believed to be ‘living in India’.

The report said the authorities were trying to bring him back to Australia.
An independent review has been launched into how he allegedly conned NSW’s health system by posing as an Indian doctor to work in four hospitals over 11 years.

The review will look into how Shyam Acharya gained medical registration, was recruited and gained employment allegedly using fake documents in the name of Dr Sarang Chitale, NSW Health announced on Monday.
